SlagTracker

The SlagTracker System is a patented method that measures the vibration on the shroud manipulator arm. When the vibration changes (indicating slag or vortexing), it is instantly recognized by the computer software and the appropriate action is taken.

Follow this link to a brief schematic of the SlagTracker System

Hatch has combined its expertise in metallurgy, vibration analysis and software engineering to develop SlagTracker, a reliable real-time slag detection system customized to meet your specific plant application.

Unpredictable and unreliable slag carry over from ladle to tundish has a serious effect on casting operations from both a yield and steel quality point of view. During sequence casting, slag entrainment in the steel stream at the end of heats leads to build-up in the thickness of tundish slag. This results in poor steel cleanliness in the cast strand, reduced tundish refractory life and reduced productivity. While increasing ladle heel may reduce the amount of tundish slag, the resulting yield loss can have a significant negative impact on productivity and steel shop capacity.

The SlagTracker System can control this slag entrainment condition to the operator’s specification. Thus, the yield/quality trade off is optimized.
