Hatch upgrades gauge measuring system at Alcoa ARP facility
April 9, 2012
Hatch was retained by Alcoa Australia Rolled Products (ARP) to provide project management services at the Warm Mill, located in Yennora, New South Wales, Australia.
Hatch managed the upgrade to a new gauge measuring system and provided integration engineering between the main vendor package and existing equipment. The client provided its own engineers to assist with modifications to the control systems associated with the processing and transmission of gauge signals to the hydraulic gap control system.
Alcoa ARP wanted to improve the gauge measuring system to have more capability and to be the latest technology. The system had become obsolete, and was no longer supported or easily programmed.
Following the upgrade, the client produces a better quality product and can obtain a more precise view of the variation in gauge throughout the coil being rolled. The new software runs on a standard industrial PC and is easily configurable. The new x-ray sources can be easily powered down for maintenance.
The project began in October 2010 and was completed in May 2011. The Wollongong and Yennora offices participated in the project.
