Hatch assesses bauxite-slurry pipeline
Hatch has completed a condition assessment of the Paragominas bauxite-slurry pipeline in Brazil for Norsk Hydro. The assessment was completed on a fast-track schedule.
The slurry pipeline is the only means of transporting bauxite from the Paragominas mine to Alunorte, the world’s largest alumina refinery.
Norsk Hydro requested the assessment to confirm the integrity of the bauxite-slurry pipeline and its potential performance over the next 25 years, before agreeing to a $4.9-billion purchase of the pipeline, bauxite supplies and Alunorte from Vale.
Norsk Hydro was pleased with the quality of the work performed and delivered by Hatch. Norsk Hydro wrote: "We are indeed pleased that Hatch was able to mobilize a capable and professional team on such short notice, and for you to accept a very (perhaps too) demanding schedule."
The assignment was completed in early May.
The Light Metals, Specialized Engineering Analysis and Design (SEAD), and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) groups in Mississauga, Sao Paolo, Perth and Brisbane supported the project.
