Coke oven groundbreaking in Pittsburgh
Hatch recently attended a groundbreaking ceremony for US Steel’s coke oven project at the Clairton Plant of the Mon Valley Operations near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The US$1.2-billion coke oven project is the largest capital investment in US Steel's history. The scope includes the addition of two new coke batteries to replace six aging batteries. The upgrade will improve productivity and environmental performance.
The Hatch team is currently working on basic engineering. Hatch will provide Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM) services for the project, which will also include a cogeneration facility to take advantage of the coke-oven by-product gases.
The project is scheduled for completion in 2014.
Hatch Pittsburgh’s leadership and project team attended the groundbreaking.
A reception followed the groundbreaking and was attended by project stakeholders, including Hatch, Krupp Uhde (battery technology and equipment supplier), Graycor Industrial Constructors, and US Steel Engineering and Operations Management. The project will be carried out in partnership among the key stakeholders.
