The Chuquicamata mining complex is located 1,650 kilometers north of Chile’s capital city, Santiago, and 2,870 meters above sea level. It includes two open pit mines, Chuquicamata and Mina Sur.
Codelco has commissioned a study to examine the feasibility of expanding the existing Chuquicamata mine to transition to underground mining.
The underground mine is expected to start operating in 2018.
Hatch is undertaking the feasibility study for Codelco’s Chuquicamata underground mine project. Hatch will focus on the basic engineering for the development of access works, environmental studies, human resources, management models, mineral handling, permanent infrastructure, processes, services and supplies, shafts, tunnels and ventilation works.
The Chuquicamata underground mine project is one of Codelco’s largest ever feasibility engineering project.
