Abstract
The South African mining industry currently has about 330 MW(R) (94,000 refrigeration tons) of installed cooling capacity using ammonia refrigeration. Hatch has been directly involved in about 60% of the above capacity. This paper shares some of the Hatch experiences regarding the safety of large ammonia refrigeration machines in South African mines.
