Abstract
Two fluid-bed roasters were constructed in 1999 to pretreat carbonaceous refractory ores at Barrick Goldstrike Mines. These are the largest gold-ore roasters in the world, which use almostpure oxygen to remove contained organic carbon and sulfide sulfur prior to a conventional carbonin-leach process for gold extraction. This article describes the overall roasting process and design features that enable these roasters to exceed their operating objectives.
