The Yarwun 2 project was a A$2.1-billion brownfield expansion of the Yarwun alumina refinery located in Gladstone, Queensland, Australia. The initial refinery (Comalco Alumina Refinery) commenced operation in September 2004 with a nameplate capacity of 1.4 Mtpa.
Detailed engineering for the expansion commenced in July 2007 and was completed in May 2009. The expansion will take the refinery nameplate capacity from 1.4 to 3.4 Mtpa.
The project is scheduled for completion in 2012.
Hatch supplied the technology for the integrated digestion and evaporation facility for the initial refinery. The scope of services for the Yarwun 2 project was for basic (FEL 2) and detailed engineering (FEL 3) for the integrated digestion facility, field engineering supervision for the digestion facilities and commissioning assistance during startup, currently scheduled for 2012.
Integrated execution team with principal EPCM contractor and the client streamlined engineering and procurement interfaces and attained key project milestones.
