The Hail Creek project was a greenfield coal mining development. The site has a resource of 1.2 billion tonnes of hard
coking coal, of which 200 million tonnes can be mined by open-cut methods. The mine in full production produces and
exports 5.5 million tonnes of metallurgical coal per year.
The project scope included coal handling and stockpiling facilities, a 1400tph coal preparation plant, an 80-cubic-metre
bucket dragline, a 47 km railway, a 30 km 66 kV power supply with switchyards, a 32 km water supply pipeline, a 9 km
access road, an on-site village, housing, mine haul roads, tailings and water management dams, and numerous industrial
facilities including workshop, administration office, fuel supply, vehicle washing facility and services.
Hatch’s scope covered the overall Project and Construction Management, including Engineering Management,
Procurement and Commissioning. The duration of services was approximately 25 months plus an additional 12 months
for dragline erection.
Hatch was responsible for safety, employee relations, environment, site management, scope, schedule and budget.
Project management functions were controlled through Hatch’s in-house integrated project management system, iPAS.
Other systems used included Primavera for schedule and Hatch’s Infostream for document control.
A team of 40 Hatch people were located on site, and managed a workforce of approximately 750.
