Adelaide is a metropolitan area with 1.1 million residents and hundreds of industrial companies, commercial offices and stores. Most of the city’s potable water supply is pumped from the Murray River, but low rainfall in southeastern Australia has reduced the volume of water entering the Murray-Darling Basin. As a result, the Government of South Australia has determined that a new source of water is needed to augment the existing supply.
The AdelaideAqua consortium will design, build, operate and maintain a desalination plant to be located at Port Stanvac, south of Adelaide.
The project will deliver up to 100 billion litres of water each year – about half of Adelaide’s current water supply.
The Hatch/SMEC Joint Venture team forms the design group for the AdelaideAqua consortia. The JV’s scope of works includes all architectural, civil, electrical, mechanical and structural design associated with:
- The seawater intake/outfall structures, tunnels and pipelines
- The intake pumping station
- All site structures including process buildings, chemical storage buildings, treated water storage and waste handling facilities
- All site civil works
- The provision and reticulation of all site services
- The energy recovery system
- Winner of the Special Recognition Award
- This is a greenfield site project with a fast-track program in order to meet the commissioning timeframe.
