Kurra Street Accommodation Village

Kurra Street Accomodation VillageHatch was commissioned by MPDJV to undertake the conceptual and detailed design and documentation of a
1,000-person accommodation village for workers involved in the construction of new BHP Billiton Iron Ore satellite mines at Orebody 18, 24 and 25, and the upgrading of existing crushing/screening facilities at Newman, Western Australia.

Scope of Services
Hatch was initially engaged to undertake a ranking assessment of options for location of the village and to develop site layouts to suit the available locations. Following selection of a preferred site, Hatch was commissioned to undertake detailed design and documentation for the accommodation village, known as the Kurra Street Village.

Hatch’s scope of work included the following:

  • Architectural design of transportable accommodation units and central facilities
  • Hydrological assessment
  • Bulk and detailed earthworks and drainage design
  • Design and documentation of all below and aboveground services including electrical/communications, gravity and pumped sewerage/retention system, potable and fire water reticulation
  • Preparation of scope of works, construction specifications and preliminary cost estimates;
  • Tender technical review and assessment
  • Expediting and QA/QC of transportable buildings at the manufacturer’s yard prior to transport to site
  • Supervision of bulk earthworks construction
  • Technical support during the construction phase.

Project Highlights

  • First use of ‘cluster’ arrangement for accommodation units, a deviation from the traditional ‘barracks’ style arrangement
  • Following occupation, positive feedback was received from the village operations and catering contractor, regarding the village layout, kitchen arrangement and village amenities.
  • As the village was constructed within Newman township, extensive community and stakeholder liaison was undertaken to ensure that the village design complemented existing town facilities and provided sufficient visual and acoustic buffering to neighbouring properties
