Track Installation on Toronto Transit Commission's Sheppard Subway Line

Abstract

On November 22, 2002, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) opened the newly constructed Sheppard Subway Line. The CDN$937 million line, consisting of 11 km of revenue track, 2 km of non-revenue track and five new stations, has been heralded as a case study in how sound program management can bring a large, fast tracked transit project in on time and within budget. Trackwork installation was carried out by TTC forces under an internal “contract”, administered by the Program Managers. This proved to be particularly beneficial because the presence of the owner, on site, increased the cooperation between the various parties occupying the same limited space in the new tunnels and stations.
