Prince 1 & 2 Wind Farm

Prince 1 & 2 Wind FarmThe Prince wind farm is a two-phase development, which involved the installation of 66 turbines with a generating capacity of 99 MW in Phase 1, while Phase 2 included 60 units for an additional 90 MW.

The total project consists of 126-GE Sle 1.5-MW wind turbine generators, with a combined capacity of 189 MW. The site is situated along a ridge parallel to the Lake Superior shoreline, with elevations up to 400 m above sea level. The area is within the rugged Canadian Shield with forested and undulating bedrock conditions.

Prince 1 construction began in September 2005 and Prince 2 construction commenced in February 2006. Turbine erection and commissioning for both phases was completed in November 2006.

Scope of Services
Hatch was appointed Owner’s Engineer by Brookfield Power in April 2005 to provide preliminary engineering, design reviews and field technical services for the 189-MW Prince wind farm, located 10 km northwest of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

Hatch’s scope of work included:

  • Preliminary engineering (review, optimize layouts)
  • Cost estimates
  • Prepare balance-of-plant (BOP) bid documents, drawings and specifications
  • Planning and coordination of geophysical investigations
  • Preparation of the Plan of Development (POD) and Environmental Management Plan (EMP)
  • Environmental issues and permits
  • Design review of EPC Contractor’s drawings
  • Full-time field monitoring
  • Review and quality audit of civil works construction
  • Value engineering
