Abstract
The objectives of this study were to specifically address short-term costs and system response to wind. An integral part of this study focused on the costs attributable to wind variability, uncertainty and additional reserves needed to accommodate wind in the Manitoba Hydro system. As hydro and wind energy interaction is complex, the study was carried out using AUTO Vista, an hourly optimization/simulation model which can model in combination, the hydro operations, transmission constraints, the external energy sources (e.g. wind, thermal) and the reserve requirement for up to a full year. This paper focuses on the approach used to study short-term wind integration costs.
