The Design and Construction of the Owen Falls Embankments
Authors: R. Donnelly, D. Protulipac
37th Annual H.G Acres Seminar - Dam Engineering, 2006

Abstract

:The original Owen Falls generating Station was constructed in Uganda just downstream of the source of the Nile in 1954. At the time, the project represented a remarkable engineering feat with the christening of the plant being one of the first duties of the newly crowned Queen Elizabeth II. Her signature can still be viewed in the Stations log book. In 1961/62, not quite a decade after the commissioning of the station, a dramatic change in the hydrology of the Victoria Nile occurred, with the outflows increasing substantially from a pre-development average of 1725 Mm3/yr to 2865 Mm3/yr (i.e. a 66% increase). From this point onward, water was continuously spilled at the site.
