The CORE (Cornwall Ontario River Energy) project is a freshwater, continuous-flow river application of Verdant’s horizontal-axis turbine technology. The project will be conducted in the St. Lawrence River near Cornwall, Ontario, Canada and is planned in two phases: Phase 1 will consist of a pilot installation of the latest generation of Verdant’s technology, followed by a Phase 2 commercial build-out of the project up to 15 MW of installed capacity.
Major funding for the CORE project is being provided by the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation’s Innovation Demonstration Fund. Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC), an arm’s-length, not-for-profit corporation created by the Government of Canada, is providing funding for Phase 1 (2009-2011) of the project. Additional project funding is being provided by the Ontario Power Authority Technology Development Fund.
Hatch is providing the engineering design of an updated mounting system for the Verdant Power turbines. Using investigations and analysis of water flow and geotechnical ground conditions, Hatch will engineer an integrated system that can be easily deployed and retrieved in the fast flowing waters of the St. Lawrence River. Innovative construction methods that are safe, reliable and efficient are being developed with the goal that the year 2009 will see the first field demonstration of the new mounting system.
