Abstract
Wherever one is in the world and in whichever part of industry, we are bombarded with stories of ‘the crisis in Asia’. Today, I would like to look forward beyond the short-term and suggest some of the ways in which the effects of the ‘cold shower’ of the current financial crisis can encourage a positive evolution in the structure of the steel industry across Asia. This is not to diminish the significance to many businesses of the current crisis, which is all too acute. My concern is with evaluating investment projects which have a scope and life-span into the next century.
