Abstract
The picture that I would like to see is that of a highly successful steel industry in Central
Europe. My definition of ‘successful’, and one that I would like you to bear in mind during
the course of this presentation, is that:
- The industry has capacity that is broadly in line with demand
- The industry has a significant but acceptable role in international trade
- The industry is viable. By this I mean in particular, that steel companies become
profitable and cash generative
- The industry has the right quality capability to fulfil customer needs
- The industry is able to compete with world-class steel companies, uses world-class best
practices and is an international force
