Hatch in Our Communities

Chile earthquake relief

In response to the earthquake and tsunami that hit Chile on February 26, 2010, more than 65 Hatch volunteers developed a Master Plan for reconstruction of some of the infrastructure in the small towns of Iloca, Duao and La Pesca. The towns are in the municipality of Licantén, a coastal region 185 miles from Santiago that experienced significant damage to buildings and infrastructure.

The Master Plan includes 15 emergency evacuation routes, plans for a civic centre to house municipal services such as police and fire stations, a community centre, a school, a green energy corridor, a wastewater treatment plant and a drinking-water treatment plant.

The Master Plan was submitted to the Chilean Minister of Housing in September 2010. The Plan is currently being considered for implementation by the Chilean government.

Pakistan flood relief

Hatch employees raised $100,000, including matching funds from Hatch and the Canadian federal government, for the eight million Pakistanis who were affected by the 2010 monsoon floods.

Haiti disaster relief

After a devastating 7.0-magnitude earthquake ravaged Haiti on January 12, 2010, killing more than 300,000, Hatch sent staff members to the island nation to assist. Our team conducted damage assessments at two Haitian hospitals, with our volunteers providing engineering services and preliminary structural assessments for the La Paix Hospital and the Children’s Hospital.

Support for universities

Hatch provides continuous support to student programs and activities, focusing on math, science and technology fields. The Gerald G. Hatch Scholarship, established in 1990, is awarded each year to 12 students (three from each of Hatch’s regions: Australasia, the Americas, Africa, Europe) who will begin undergraduate engineering studies at a university or college.

Hatch also sponsors a number of scholarships, bursaries and other endowments at more than 40 universities and colleges worldwide.

Solar power at Canadian Opera Company

Hatch sponsored the installation of a 30-kW solar photovoltaic array for the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto that qualifies under Ontario’s renewable power feed-in tariff (FIT) program. The system, donated by Hatch to the Canadian Opera Company (COC), is an asset that will produce revenue for COC through a 20-year FIT contract that provides a subsidized rate for the electricity generated. The system will also reduce the building’s overall carbon footprint.
